New video: Maine’s Black History

November 20, 2020

Historian Bob Greene recently recorded an informative and thought-provoking lecture for the History Center about Maine’s Black history, with a particular focus on Yarmouth. His meticulous research in archival materials, like vital records and census lists, led to some surprising findings about race in Maine, which enable Bob to probe and question the extent of Maine’s perceived whiteness in this talk. Click to watch the video below.

A native of Portland, Bob Greene is a retired Associated Press journalist and a Maine historian. He has done extensive research into his own genealogy and discovered that he is at least the 8th generation of his family to be born in Cumberland County.  Bob has taught “Black History of Maine” at OLLI and served on the Board of Trustees of the Maine Historical Society.
