Peter Merrill: Perspectives by a Mainer

September 11, 2026

“Coastal Inlet” by Peter Merrill

On view now through October 31!

We are pleased to announce the opening of the Stonewall Gallery’s fall show: Perspectives by a Mainer, watercolors by Yarmouth artist Peter Merrill (1930-2024). Join us from 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, October 1 for a free opening reception. Light refreshments will be served.

Organized by the artist’s Yarmouth neighbors as a tribute to Peter Merrill’s life and love of painting, the exhibit features Merrill’s vibrant and engaging watercolors that depict Maine’s coastal landscapes, architecture, and flora. Expressive skies, changing weather, and views of nature unite the forty original paintings on display. As noted in his obituary, Merrill loved the Maine outdoors and believed that “a walk in the woods was the best remedy for young and old.” Merrill was a prolific painter in his later years and was almost always accompanied by a beloved dog. Proceeds from this show will benefit his favorite animal rescues as well as the History Center.

The show will be on view through October 31, 2026. The Stonewall Gallery is located inside the Yarmouth History Center at 118 East Elm Street in Yarmouth, Maine. Our hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00-4:00.

A note about parking: Please note that the Town has closed Royal River Park and its parking lot this summer for construction and improvements. Parking is available in the History Center’s lot. On-street spots are available on the upper part of East Elm Street, towards Main Street. There are also spaces available just before the East Elm Street bridge.
