Spring 2021 Lecture Series

February 23, 2021

Take a look at what’s coming up in our Spring 2021 Lecture Series. All lectures will be held via Zoom; please email info@yarmouthmehistory.org to be added to the attendee list for any of the following talks.

Tuesday, March 16, 4:00 pm ~ Curt Martin, independent historian and lecturer, Petticoat Whalers: Women on American Whaleships. Curt Martin visited the History Center back in 2018 for a fascinating and well-attended talk about the history of the American whaling industry. Join him again this spring as he shares his new research about the role of women in whaling during this era.

Tuesday, April 20, 4:00 pm ~ Ron Romano, historic cemetery expert, and B. Craig Stinson, genealogist, The Hill Family Billboard Monument in Yarmouth: New Discoveries. This pair of speakers will delve into the fascinating history and recent restoration of the Hill family monument in Yarmouth’s Baptist Cemetery. Ron Romano’s new research into this unusual “billboard” monument brings new understanding of this type of gravestone in Maine, while Craig Stinson’s thorough genealogical and archival research enriches our understanding of the people memorialized on the stone. You will be amazed at the stories this single marker can tell!

Tuesday, May 18, 4:00 pm ~ C. Patrick Burrowes, retired professor and author, John Brown Russwurm (1799-1851): The Maine Roots of a Black Icon. Carl Patrick Burrowes, Ph.D, is a retired humanities professor and university administrator who has published extensively on the history of the Black press and antebellum Black emigration to Liberia. Join us in May to learn more about one-time Yarmouth resident John Brown Russwurm’s role as an abolitionist, newspaper publisher, and governor of Liberia.

Tuesday, June 15, 4:00 pm ~ Margaret Gaertner, historic building consultant, Researching Your Old House. Curious about the history of your house? Margaret Gaertner will share tips about how to delve into the past using deeds, census records, historic maps, and other rich online resources to help you uncover the story of your house.

The lecture series is sponsored by the Leon and Lisa Gorman Fund and is offered free of charge to all.
