Winners of the 2019 Wellcome Prize

November 20, 2019

From left to right: Katie Worthing, Executive Director of Yarmouth Historical Society, with Makayla McGregor and Rowan Joyce.

Yarmouth Historical Society is proud to present the winners of The Wellcome Prize for Student Historians. Rowan Joyce won first prize for her exploration of the life and times of Capt. John D. Pennell of Brunswick (read the paper here) and Makayla MacGregor claimed second prize with her investigation of the social and economic history of the Cumberland Fair (read the paper here). Joyce and MacGregor presented their findings in a public talk on Tuesday, November 19 at North Yarmouth Academy.

Rowan Joyce is a senior at Brunswick High School. She enjoys studying history and literature, especially tales of old New England. She is an active member of her school theater program and a dancer at the Ballet School. In her free time Rowan enjoys reading, listening to musical soundtracks, and hanging with her two cats.

Makayla MacGregor is a senior at Gray-New Gloucester High School. She has been interested in English since she was eight, and frequently writes fiction in her free time. Alongside homework and writing, Makayla spends her time practicing the violin, playing table tennis, and reading. She has two dogs and an older brother who introduced her to the world of reading.
