Historic building consultant Margaret Gaertner joined us on June 15 to discuss resources and strategies for Researching Your Old House. She shared tips about how to delve into the past using deeds, census records, historic maps, and other rich online resources to help you uncover the story of your house. 

Margaret Gaertner is a Historic Building Consultant based in Portland. Since earning her degrees from Parsons School of Design and the University of Pennsylvania, she has spent the past twenty years working on a wide range of historic preservation projects.  She works with building owners on all phases of preservation projects, from archival research, to project planning and specification writing, and finally working in the field with contractors for successful implementation.  Her work includes building condition assessments, project design, the occasional National Register nomination, and working to successfully apply for certified rehabilitations (also known as “tax credits.”)  She especially enjoys working with historic sites, where every project is an opportunity to consider and possibly strengthen a site’s interpretation.

The lecture series is sponsored by the Leon and Lisa Gorman Fund and is offered free of charge to all.
